Fatty acids

Their roles:

  • Contribution to the immune system
  • Regulation of inflammation
  • Function and formation of the cells

Many fatty acids can be synthesized by mammals mainly from palmitic acid (C16), but also from oleic acid. However it is not the case for certain fatty acids with 18 atoms of carbon; these come exclusively from vegetables or bacteria. It means that these fatty acids (the essential ones, also named vitamin F) are provided only from the feed materials.

 

Linoleic acid (C18 : 2) and alpha-linolenic acid ALA (C18 : 3) are 2 fundamental fatty acids able to produce gamma-linolenic acid, eicosapentaenoic acid EPA (C20 : 5) and docosahexaenoic acid DHA (C22 : 6).

 

These amino acids can influence the metabolism of the arachidonic pathway and determine the creation of inflammation and immunity mediators. They form cell membranes and influence their functionality.
