L-carnitine

L-carnitine and its roles:

  • Supports energy production
  • Helps regulate lipogenesis
  • Reinforces osteoblasts activity
  • Supports sperm viability and motility

Carnitine, as its active isomer (L-carninite form), is a transporter molecule, synthesized from a base of lysine and methionine, in a process where vitamin C works as a cofactor. It allows the transportation of fatty acids chains from the cytosol to the mitochondria. These fatty acids will be used as an energy source in the ß-oxidation.

Horses at rest do not appear to need carnitine but during intensive work, the reserve can decrease rapidly, and the liver and kidney syntheses are slowed down. Endurance horses are a target population for a supplementation in this element.
