Prebiotic
AT A GLANCE:
Prebiotic fibres and their roles when given in appropriate amounts:
- Improve microbial quality of droppings
- Decrease the risk of colic
- Optimize fermentation and stabilize pH
- Support health during feed changes
- Decrease the risk of stomach ulcers
- Improve colostrum quality
A recent study conducted on obese horses presenting a high risk of metabolic syndrome (laminitis…) and receiving FOS (or not) showed a positive influence of these prebiotics on the insulin status of horses.
Sources:

They are defined as non-digestible but fermentable feed which stimulate the development and the activity of the beneficial flora located in the intestinal tract.
They help to improve the well-being and health of the horse.
FOS or fructo-oligosaccharides are complex sugars composed of fructose chains ended with a glucose unit. The FOS are considered as good prebiotics for horses, but they are not the only ones available.
