Hydroxyproline

AT A GLANCE:

Hydroxyproline and its roles:

  • Constituent of collagen (bones, tendons, joints…)
  • Muscle development
  • Cartilage reinforcement
Hydroxyproline

Hydroxyproline and its sources:

  • Collagen fraction (fish,…)
  • Whey proteins

Hydroxyproline is derivated from proline. It is an amino acid involved in growth. In combination with vitamin C it stabilizes the collagen chains to help reinforce bones, tendons, joints, and muscular matrix.

Hydroxyproline gives structure to the collagen fibres in order to improve their resistance during traction, thanks to the chemical link between the surrounding polypeptide chains. Publications indicate that a feed containing a collagen fraction will improve muscle development in growing horses. A true positive effect of hydroxyproline is also noted on the cartilage in vitro.
