Harpagosides are found concentrated in the secondary roots of Harpagophytum procumbens, or Devil's claw. This plant grows in the southern hemisphere; South Africa is the principal producer.
Since 1820 this plant has been imported into Europe for its appetite stimulating effects, and as a digestion regulator and pain killer.
